Just a random thought on how people perceive the intentions of others. Its human nature to want better for themselves. It is bred into us. A football player prays for a touchdown; a dedicated employee hopes for a raise; etc.

I have seen a lot of people complaining about what other people want, and it being selfish. If we lived in a society where all people wanted/prayed for something for someone else, we would have no high-paid football players; we would have no need for a raise.

If we as a whole cease being so concerned with our own status, we will evolve human nature past this destructive pattern.

I recently posted an article on long meta titles and how the length of them effects tabbed viewing in major browsers. I felt it was necessary to go a little further into meta tags. Meta descriptions and meta titles are just as important to your site for different reasons than tabbed browsing. Your keywords and description won’t show to the user at all, but a lot of times the only way they will get to your site to see your meta title is if your keywords and description are good enough.

Having a long list of keywords – no matter how relevant is just plain old unnecessary. The same applies to your meta description. Having a paragraph of text that goes beyond the length of a tweet will not benefit your site any more than a well thought out sentence that briefly describes the content on your site.

Now, hopefully I won’t bet shut out of what little search engine relevance I have for saying this, but I think that a site could still do relatively well without keywords or descriptions. This goes especially for Google, as they seem to constantly make their engine just a little bit smarter. I do acknowledge that they are still important, but a well maintained site should be able to do relatively well without them.

Keywords: 14 Comma Separated Values
Description: 140 Characters

I had the opportunity to develop a new feature for a content search for a website I am working on today, and when it was finished a few people didn’t see the reasoning behind it. I can’t give too much away because the site isn’t live yet, but it made me pose the question of are we designing and coding websites based on other people’s ideas or our own?

Who or what defines what is a useful tool? In short, we do. The designers and developers of the Internet. We decided what a user would use and understand. We define what is on the Internet and if I can develop a unique, functional and practical way of displaying it, the question is no longer the stagnant why – it is the productive how.

There is a lot of talk about the financial crisis facing the European countries currently, and I won’t spend too much time going into it – I am no expert. I am interested in the social and humane impact and cause of this.Since we are all becoming connected by one larger global economy, and the economy grows in accordance with the people in it, it is not hard to see how one countries failure impacts another.

What is important to note is the correlation between the economy and the people. The less money the people have – the less money their country has. As the poorer countries come into the equation the more stress it puts on the market/system.

Common human sense says that we must focus more on the social wellbeing of other countries. If we don’t do this, economic failure will always be more prominent than economic and social growth.

OK, all of us in the field of web design are familiar with jQuery and it’s use in developing a website. However, I still find it amazing how much it can simplify the development of a website. With that being said, it is important to remember how much it can impact the experience of a website. A good example of this is how Facebook used to look without JavaScript.

We can’t build a website that is built around JavaScript in good conscience, and good practice says we shouldn’t. There are still a good amount of users that have outdated browsers or are on restricted networks. A website should always have an alternate design if the designers rely on JavaScript to display content. This is the only way to maintain accessibility and some semblance of a user experience. The same goes for have a separate style sheet and design for mobile browser content.

<cfobject type="JAVA" action="Create" name="img" class="java.awt.Image"></cfobject>
<!--- requires knowing the desired width of the image/div --->
<cfset imgDims = 90 />
<cfscript>
imagePath = ExpandPath ("/uploads/Image/sponsors/#sm_image#");
img = tk.getDefaultToolkit().getImage("#imagePath#");
imgWidth = img.getWidth();
imgHeight = img.getHeight();
percentage = (imgDims / imgWidth) * 100;
newHeight = round((imgHeight * percentage) / 100);
margin = (imgDims - newHeight) / 2;
</cfscript>

Now this makes the task easy using the built in capabilities of JAVA in ColdFusion! Once that was done, I simply outputted the margin variable in the inline css of the page. I tried a few “dynamic” CSS options, but none of them seemed to do the trick for me.
